Tena's Holiday Cut-Out Cookies

Cookie Recipe:
1 Cup Softened Butter
1 Cup White Granulated Sugar
1 Large Egg
1 Teaspoon Pure Vanilla Extract
2 Teaspoons Baking Powder
3 Cups All-purpose Flour

Cookie Directions:

  1. To make the cookies: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Sift the flour and baking powder together in a bowl. With an electric mixer using the paddle attachment, cream the butter and sugar for about three minutes.
  3. Add the egg and vanilla and beat for another minute or so.
  4. Add the flour mixture in two batches and beat until the dough begins to pull away from the sides of the bowl.
  5. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface.  Roll the dough with a floured rolling pin until it is about 1/8-inch thick. Cut out cookies with holiday cookie cutters.
  6. When they bake, these cookies will not really spread, so you can place them pretty close to each other on a baking sheet. Bake for six to seven minutes or until the cookies begin to take on a golden color. Don’t let them get too brown before removing from the oven. Cool completely.

Cookie Glaze:
1 Cup Confectioners' Sugar
1 Tablespoon light Corn Syrup
2 Tablespoons Water
Food Coloring

Glaze Directions:

  1. Stir confectioners' sugar, corn syrup, and water together.
  2. Divide glaze into separate containers and add food coloring a drop at a time until the color you want is obtained.
  3. This glaze must be stirred each time you use it. If it is not stirred before each use it will dry with a mottled look instead of a solid color.  Cookies may now be dipped in the glaze or the glaze  can be brushed on.
  4. Allow each color to dry before adding additional colors.  Sprinkles, colored sugars or Jimmies may be added while glaze is still wet.  Allow glaze to dry over night before storing or packaging.
